It was a joint venture between several major Canadian media companies and was a primary destination for Canadian professionals and employers. It competed directly with other major players like Monster and CareerBuilder in the Canadian market.

However, the online recruitment landscape shifted, and in 2018, the Workopolis website and assets were acquired by the global recruitment media company, Recruitics. Today, the original Workopolis.com site no longer operates as an independent job board in its classic form and often redirects or is integrated into other services. Its name remains significant for its historical role in shaping Canada's digital recruitment industry.
